Location, hospital ward. In the room is HCSW, Patient and staff nurse. 2-3 weeks later – hospital admission for symptom control.

Often it is the HCSW who will be at the bedside – he/ she must be able to make an assessment if it is appropriate to continue with the care without checking out with the registered nurse

Observe distress in patient and take appropriate action
Give patient time when breathless

Often patients will express that they are dying to the person who is helping them during a nursing intervention such as assisting with a wash- it is important that there is a response to that - - not to ignore it
It is also important that the HCSW reports this back to the Staff Nurse

Feeling a bit out of her depth - suggesting to get another member of staff rather than ignore what is being said
